Why I’m Going to Stop Running (or Why I Won’t Be Doing 21km for Leg 2 of Run United)

I’m proud to say I’m now officially a 21k Finisher.

RUNRIO1 was a great event! It was my first time to join, and they were more organized than the 10k event that we ran last year. RUNRIO had a motivating pep talk and warm up before gun start, an ocean’s supply of water and Gatorade, celebrity pacers, and a loot bag full of free meds- with a can of corned beef! My only annoyance with the event itself is that they ran out of size S shirts. Meaning that even though you specified your size at registration it’s still first come first serve. Which is totally lame since I got stuck with a size L shirt that I can probably only wear as a dress. A disadvantage if you finish slow, I guess.

We didn’t finish with the best time, but we finished nonetheless. Since I wasn’t competing with anyone and just doing it for me, I count it as a successful tick off the bucket list. It was really fun to move up to 21k after doing 10k for my first run last year, but I don’t think I’ll be running any more this year.

Just to make it clear, I’m not blaming RUNRIO. This is a personal decision.

No, I’m not quitting because of a shirt. And I honestly don’t think it’s quitting- more like a break up.

Running, it’s not you, it’s me.
I just don’t love you like I used to.

I went through the honeymoon stage during the 10k, and got too comfortable training for the 21k. During the actual run, I realized I had to end it. Even though I really want to exceed myself, I have to admit I have no passion for running. After doing 10k, I was really hyped this year at the prospect of leveling up and doing 21. But it was the thought that attracted me. The idea of finishing- not the journey itself. Which means I was doing it for the wrong reasons. It’s like staying in a relationship when the flame has gone out. I don’t want to do that. Running will take root and find love in others- no doubt about it- but I want to focus on other passions.

Though I’m not quitting cold turkey. I’ll still go for the after work jog to de-stress. Now I can do it with no commitment. But it would be really cool to complete the United Hexagonal Medal… Running, maybe we can stay friends?

Kudos to those I trained for this run with! We finished!

Especially to Lyca for introducing me to running and Rigs for sticking by my side during the 21k!

Determination is an original work born in Seaside, MOA on March 8, 2015. It was the response to Enervon‘s question: What separates a man from a #mamaw? Only a few hours after conception, it was mutilated by a hashtag and I had to hold myself back from looking for who wrote it and going all Prince Oberyn on him/her. One of the unavoidable events from writing on a freedom board.

190 days til 20

Calligraphy- HEY Ambigram

Hey, there’s only 190 days until I turn 20. Yeah, normal people don’t count down so far from big dates, whatever- but I did. That made me realize how much has happened in almost 2 decades- and how little I’ve been documenting anything. Lately, I’ve been trying to get comfortable sharing my work (since they’re unhappy sitting in their dusty corners), hence, my first official blog post!

This is for future-granny-me and the friends and family that I don’t have the chance to talk to personally on a regular basis. I’ll be sharing about my travels, passions, art, eureka moments, mess ups, and whatever else life throws at me.
